1 Ashmere 87 Inter-Guild Relations Update: Carpenters and Wrights Guild
Submitted by Lysandra Paeff
I had an appointment with Mar-Tok, the guildmaster at the Carpenters and Wrights Guild. I know him from my work with the City. He is a fair dealer, but also quite cynical about do-gooders. I am sure that when I arrive that he will say he believes The Silver Spire Guild is the worst kind of do-gooders. I decided not to try to work any deals, but to approach him on business.
“We have gardens...”
“So I’ve heard.”
“Yes, well, with winter approaching, we’d like cold frames for them. Our druid initiates are learning how they’re built, but we rely on what’s in those gardens. We’d like a quote for what you’d charge to build them.”
“Hmph. Thought the City was giving you a greenhouse.”
“I... well, I hadn’t heard that, but if they are, that’s for a beautification project for the city, not our gardens.”
“Hmph.”
I shifted in my seat, while deciding to play coy. “I can leave if you’re not interested in our business. I can probably...”
“Impatient.” He spat the word.
I bristled, but stayed silent.
“We can do it. I’ll send someone over tomorrow to take measurements and give a quote.”
“Very well. They should ask for Niamh.”
As I left, I thought I heard him chuckling under his breath, but it could have been mumbling. I don’t much like the man.
After that, I headed over to the City Center to check the land deeds found at the Spire to see if they were still current. I took no documents with me, just a crystal from Riel loaded with the deeds.
I was familiar with the archives, so I needed no help. The City required the archivist to be in the room with me, so I had to work out a way to disguise what I was looking at. I found several ledgers, including the one that would contain the deeds, and holding my breath, I sat down and began my research.
I flipped through ledgers I was not interested in, pretending to study them. When I came to the one that showed the deeds, I held my breath. And there it was. The Alizac land deed had never been transferred. Neither had Matmaiwl. Neither had Leandow. None of them had been. The nobles had all built their compounds on lands they did not own.
I put it aside as if I had not found what I wanted and went on to another and another. Finally, I took some notes out of a ledger of completely irrelevant information, tucked my notepad into my waistband and replaced the ledgers.
I thanked the archivist and returned to the guildhall, afraid that I would be arrested by the Watch before reaching its safety.
“Atlene, I’m concerned that I’ve tipped our hand. We have no proof if the archivist notifies them and they transfer the deeds before we can do anything.”
In the end, we sent Riel with a crystal showing the land deeds and an affidavit from me about what I’d seen in the City archives to Anania Mosquay, editor-in-chief at the Windgrest Chronicle. It was out of our hands. Neither of us were happy about that.
